Frequently Asked Questions
Applying for a grant
For details about who can apply, what we fund and how to submit an application, please see our Apply for a Grant page.
How do I know if my project aligns with the Sargood Bequest’s focus?
We encourage you to visit Our Values page where you’ll find what guides our funding decisions and the areas we’re passionate about supporting. This is the best way to see if your organisation or project is a good fit with the Sargood Bequest.
Do you fund wages or salaries?
We avoid funding wages/salaries for day-to-day staffing because we can't commit to more than one year of funding, so we don’t want to create uncertainty for your team if future funding for your ongoing operations isn’t secured. Instead, we focus on supporting projects in ways that help you move forward with confidence and build long-term sustainability for your work. Costs for project-specific specialist/contracted support may be considered.
How can I apply for a Strategic Impact or multi-year grant?
Strategic Impact Grants are larger, multi-year commitments that are made proactively by our Trustees, so there is no open application process. You are welcome to apply for a Responsive Impact grant through our annual grants round – these grants are usually under/around $5000.
As part of our learning, we are exploring what multi-year partnerships could look like. If this might be relevant for your organisation, we’d love your input. Please click here to share a brief explanation of how a multi-year grant might work for you.
Can I apply as an individual?
We don’t usually fund individuals, as our aim is to support projects that benefit the wider community. Most applications therefore need to come from a group or organisation. If you’re applying as an individual, you’ll need to show that your project delivers a clear community benefit beyond your own personal development.
Grants Management
The Trustees Grants Meeting, at which all applications are considered, is usually held around March following the application closing date of 30 November. Applicants will be notified of outcomes and grants are usually paid out by the end of April.
What are the reporting requirements for grants?
For Responsive Impact grants, we don't have any reporting or accountability requirements and don't ask for any formal reporting. Some groups do choose to send reports, a brief email or some pictures as we love receiving feedback and hearing about the amazing mahi organisations have been doing. If you do have something you would like to send through, there is no deadline for this, and it will be happily received at any time.
Reporting for Strategic Impact Grants is tailored with each community partner and communicated directly.
What are the tax and GST implications of a grant?
Our grants are given as unconditional gifts and are non-taxable. Because they are not payment for goods or services, they are not subject to GST.
